While The Book of Forgotten Witches focuses on the wisdom of folk traditions, it also has two other layers. The narrator, the Keeper of a hidden witches’ library, tells us about the mysteries of the tarot and alchemy. Then, at the end of each chapter, there’s a short story that allows for deeper reflection on contemporary themes of witchcraft.
For example, we look at how consumerism demands our souls and what we can do to resist its dark charm, and the distant but inspiring possibility of reconnecting with nature. One of the stories is about a witch trial of two women who want to start a family together in a town where they are not accepted. Fortunately, they are not alone in this fight. A shaman, a raven, and even an ancient, long-dormant power are on their side against the dictatorial Warden of Wrothold.
