Angeline Tubbs

Angeline Tubbs, the Witch of Saratoga

Next in the series of tales from The Book of Forgotten Witches is the story of a girl who, against all odds, not only survived on her own, but became known as the Witch of Saratoga.

Angeline Tubbs was only 15 years old when she became engaged to a British soldier and sailed with him to America. After losing a battle, her fiancé abandoned her in the wilderness, where she knew nobody. Despite being all alone in a foreign country, she found the strength to survive. She mastered witchcraft and was said to be able to converse with spirits during the most violent thunderstorms by standing in the middle of whirlwinds.

The story of Angeline Tubbs is just the first of many in Chapter III, Survivors, where you can read about witches who have overcome great adversity.

We also pay tribute to those who have been persecuted for their craft. In every age there have been those who, seeing the power of witches, have worked to banish them from society. Out of envy, fear or sheer evil, they stigmatized those who were once revered as seers, healers and guardians.

Let us remember those who survived the false accusations and those who were sent to the gallows or burned at the stake, so their names outlive those of their accusers.
